چکیده

One of checkpointing and recovery technique’s important capabilities is file checkpointing, i.e., to save and restore the state of user files of the process. This paper describes the design and implementation of a file checkpointing approach called Modification Operation Buffering. This approach buffers all the modification operations after a checkpoint until the next one, making all the operations between two checkpoints atomic as a whole. By choosing a suitable size dynamically for memory buffer, and by hiding the latency of flushing the buffer, this approach achieved an overhead lower than

Checkpointing Orchestration for Performance Improvement

Checkpointing is a mostly used mechanism for supporting fault tolerance of high performance computing (HPC), but notorious in its expensive disk access. Parallel file systems such as Lustre, GPFS, PVFS are widely deployed on super computers to provide fast I/O bandwidth for general data-intensive applications. However, the unique feature of checkpointing makes it impossible to benefit from the ...

The performance of independent checkpointing in distributed systems

This paper describes performance measurements of an implementation of independent checkpointing in a network of workstations. Independent checkpointing is a simple technique for providing fault tolerance in distributed system, Because processes do not coordinate during checkpointing, this technique has a low run-time overhead. To avoid the classical domino effect, our implementation relies on a...

A Minimal-Cost Inherent-Feedback Approach for Low-Power MRF-Based Logic Gates

The Markov random field (MRF) theory has been accepted as a highly effective framework for designing noise-tolerant nanometer digital VLSI circuits. In MRF-based design, proper feedback lines are used to control noise and keep the circuits in their valid states. However, this methodology has encountered two major problems that have limited the application of highly noise immune MRF-based circui...

Low-cost Checkpointing-based Rollback Recovery Algorithm Considering Scalability

In this paper, we design a low-cost checkpointing-based rollback recovery algorithm to address the traditional scalability problem of synchronous checkpointing in the completely different point of view compared with existing ones. This algorithm enables a cluster-wide set of processes to take their semi-global checkpointing procedure while a small set of cluster heads monitor local commit of th...

User-Level Checkpointing for LinuxThreads Programs

Multiple threads running in a single, shared address space is a simple model for writing parallel programs for symmetric multiprocessor (SMP) machines and for overlapping I/O and computation in programs run on either SMP or single processor machines. Often a long running program’s user would like the program to save its state periodically in a checkpoint from which it can recover in case of a f...
